Once you become a parent, it seems like danger lurks around every corner for curious children during their exploration to the new world. We understand accident never come as expected, but we can use some baby proofing basics that make your home a safe place for your children. Being prepared can protect them from getting into dangerous areas around your house or stop them becoming more serious. However, it should be noted that there is no substitute for supervision.
As reported by CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), every year 9.2 million children visit the ER because of unintentional injuries. The majority of these incidents happen at home, including falls, ingesting poisonous substances, burns, and being struck by objects etc.
- Each year, about 3,500 button battery swallowing cases are reported to U.S. poison control centers. Every 30 seconds a poison control center receives a call about a child getting into a poison.
SAFETY TIP: Use baby safety locks/latches to keep dangerous chemicals and other potentially hazardous items out of sight and reach of children.
- Every hour, a child goes to the ER because of a TV tip-over.
SAFETY TIP: Use brackets, braces, mounts or wall straps to secure unstable or top-heavy furniture or TVs and prevent tip-overs.
- Each day more than 320 children are seen in emergency rooms from burn injuries, many of which come from the kitchen.
SAFETY TIP: Lock the switch of your oven and stove, use a baby safety gate between kitchen and other area.
- Every year, there were more than 10K of young children visit the ER due to electric shock.
SAFETY TIP: Use outlet covers to prevent children from reach of electric sockets.
- Other injuries such as finger pinch by door shutting, falls from window and stair, bumping into furniture etc.
SAFETY TIP: Use a few sensible safety measures like baby door stopper, window guards, safety gate, corner and edge protector etc.
